Buying Rubber-lined Pipe Spools: Specify the Complete Component

Buy rubber-lined pipe spools as identified components with agreed interfaces and records, rather than ordering lining by area alone. A useful quotation connects the steel fabrication, selected rubber lining, finished geometry and delivery package. Confirm who owns each part of that package before comparing suppliers.

Define the duty for each line

Provide the medium, composition, concentration range, normal and maximum temperatures, pressure or vacuum conditions, cleaning agents and expected solids. Identify whether the line handles abrasive slurry, corrosive liquid or another duty. Trelleborg's GoldLine brochure lists pipe spool lining among slurry applications; that example does not establish suitability for every chemical. Ask for written confirmation covering your selected compound and actual service.

Freeze drawings and connection details

Send the current drawing revision and a component schedule covering straight spools, bends, branches and reducers. Identify each item consistently in the quotation and delivery list. State the governing flange specification, mating faces, bolt orientation and dimensions that the finished component must meet.

Ask how lining terminations, flange faces and any unlined areas will be shown for approval. Changes after fabrication should require a documented review rather than an informal substitution.

Compare complete supply packages

Separate steel fabrication, lining materials, application, inspection, packing and freight. A lining-only quote cannot be compared directly with a finished spool quotation. If the customer supplies the steel, define incoming condition, drawing approval and responsibility for rejected components.

Ask the supplier to explain the proposed compound, bonding system and curing route. Obtain the current application documents and identify who confirms readiness for transport and installation. A steel pressure rating alone does not confirm the lining's chemical compatibility.

Agree inspection and handover

Request an inspection plan for the complete component, including the proposed treatment of joints, terminations and repairs. Agree which dimensional and lining records accompany each spool identification.

Any specified pressure test and lining examination need an agreed sequence. Inspection methods and settings should follow the selected system and qualified procedure. Define how damage discovered during receipt or installation will be reported and assessed.

Put these items in the order

• Line duty and the approved drawing revision.
• Component identifiers, quantities and connection requirements.
• Named lining compound and complete supply scope.
• Inspection records, protective packing and delivery responsibilities.
• A written process for changes, repairs and nonconforming items.

Avoid the common shortcuts

Do not copy a compound from another process line simply because the pipe size matches. Avoid approving fabrication before the lined interfaces are defined. Treat unexplained exclusions as open commercial questions, especially where field connections or customer-supplied steel are involved.
