Rubber Lining for Sulfuric Acid Tanks: Confirm the Actual Duty

Prepare a sulfuric acid tank lining inquiry with actual service conditions, a named compound, complete installation scope and written supplier confirmation.

Select rubber lining for sulfuric acid tanks only after the supplier reviews the complete duty and confirms a specific system. The words “acid resistant” do not settle that decision. A purchase specification should connect the operating envelope, tank construction, lining materials and installation responsibility.

Describe more than the acid name

Provide the acid concentration range, normal and maximum temperatures, tank substrate, dimensions and drawings. Describe liquid and vapour exposure, operating pressure or vacuum, cleaning media and any known additional constituents. If conditions are uncertain, mark them as pending rather than assigning convenient values.

Include any temperature or concentration changes expected during transfer, cleaning or abnormal operation. Ask the process owner to confirm those conditions before requesting a final recommendation. The inquiry should represent the tank's actual use, not just the label on a supply container.

Request a named system

Blair Rubber discusses sulfuric acid lining selection in relation to concentration and temperature. That establishes a need for service-specific review, rather than a universal rubber recommendation.

Ask suppliers to identify the proposed compound, polymer base, lining construction and current technical documents. Obtain written suitability confirmation for the stated conditions and ask which missing data prevent confirmation. A material used successfully for another acid should not be accepted solely on that basis.

Compare proposals on the same basis

Distinguish sheet supply, compatible bonding materials and complete installation. Request separate material and application prices, with inspection, transport and site support clearly included or excluded.

Ask how the proposed preparation and curing route fits the tank and available facilities. For an existing vessel, clarify old-lining removal and substrate assessment. Any proposed change to the material or installation system should be identified and reviewed, not hidden as an equivalent substitution.

Set acceptance and commissioning boundaries

Agree the inspection plan, treatment of seams and repairs, handover records and decision authority for deviations. Inspection settings must follow the selected system and approved procedure.

Have the supplier identify the commissioning requirements in its current application instructions. Neither a general chemical-resistance description nor a pre-vulcanised sheet designation independently confirms when the completed installation can enter service.

Include a procurement checklist

  • Confirmed concentration and temperature envelope.
  • Tank drawings, substrate and exposure zones.
  • Compound identification and written suitability response.
  • Preparation, application, inspection and commissioning responsibilities.
  • Quote exclusions, change process and handover documents.

Avoid misleading comparisons

Do not treat all sulfuric acid duties as identical, transfer hydrochloric acid recommendations automatically, or assume a thicker sheet corrects an unsuitable compound. Do not present a manufacturer's application example as your project's performance guarantee.

Submit the operating brief when requesting a Rubber Lining proposal.

FAQ

Is rubber lining suitable for every sulfuric acid tank?

A blanket answer would be misleading. Ask a supplier to review the actual concentration, temperatures, tank construction and other conditions and confirm a named system.

Can I reuse a lining specification from a hydrochloric acid tank?

Do not transfer it automatically. Submit the sulfuric acid duty for a separate material and complete-system review.

What should accompany the final order?

Include the confirmed duty, approved proposal and drawings, compound identification, inspection scope, commissioning requirements and agreed handling of changes.
